COMPLETE OR PARTIAL DENTURES IN SURREY
WHAT ARE DENTURES?
Most people have some idea of what dentures are but not everyone knows how common they are.
Dentures are false prosthetic teeth. They come in a variety of forms and levels of function. Most people associate dentures with the elderly. To some extent, this association is fitting.
Our teeth do decay and occasionally fall out with age. However, seniors are a mere fraction of the population of those with dentures.
Accelerated tooth decay, periodontal disease, drug use, and malnutrition are all potential factors which may lead to an early necessity for dentures.
Dentures can provide a world of benefit for the wearer.
Three benefits include the renewed ability to chew and improved pronunciation skills. Perhaps the biggest benefit dentures can provide is the increase in self-esteem the wearer feels with a shiny new set of teeth!
At Strive Dental, we love giving our patients something to smile about. Our experienced cosmetic dentists have helped hundreds of Surrey residents restore their smiles and their confidence by fitting them for dentures.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR GETTING DENTURES?
Dentures come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Dentures can either be “complete” or “partial”.
PARTIAL DENTURES
Partial dentures are typically used when enough existing teeth remain. They can replace one or several teeth as opposed to replacing a whole row of teeth.
Partial dentures are attached to the mouth using a fake gum base or a series of wires. In some cases, a bridge will be created, in which the false teeth will be connected to your real teeth.
COMPLETE DENTURES
Complete dentures, on the other hand, are used to replace an entire row of teeth. In some cases, some teeth (even healthy teeth), must be extracted to make way for dentures to be fitted.
Complete dentures can be either “conventional” or “immediate.”
Conventional dentures are typically used as permanent dentures. They’re often made once remaining teeth have been extracted and the gums have healed.
Once the teeth have been extracted, an impression will be made of the jaw and gums. The impression is often made by having you bite into a putty material. The impression will be sent to a lab where your permanent dentures will be crafted.
Immediate dentures are typically meant to be used in the period between teeth extraction and the placement of more permanent dentures.
Immediate dentures are made ahead of time and give the users immediate use of prosthetic teeth. They do have one major downfall in that they may not always be a perfect fit. This can lead to impaired use and discomfort.
Once your permanent dentures have arrived from the lab, you will be called in for an appointment where your dentures will be fitted. You will be given instructions to care for your new dentures. Your dentist will more than likely file down certain portions of your new dentures for a better last-minute fit.
