WHAT IS A DENTAL BRIDGE?

A dental bridge is an insert that fills the gap between one or several missing teeth. In short, a bridge is made of two crowns that are cemented to the teeth on either side of the gap.

Chronic pain is likely to occur when a gap is left unfilled, as many surrounding teeth may shift out of place to fill part of the gap.

This can subject the surrounding teeth to an uncomfortable amount of strain.

There are currently four types of dental bridges available to Surrey patients depending on the number of teeth missing.

TRADITIONAL BRIDGES

Traditional bridges involve the construction of two crowns, or tooth shaped caps. Your dentist will place the crowns over anchoring teeth.

A traditional bridge is the most common type of bridge and are composed of porcelain fused to metal or ceramics.

CANTILEVER BRIDGES

Cantilever bridges are used when your mouth has not been or cannot be evenly prepared to host the bridge (this often means that the anchors cannot be evenly placed).

Unlike resin-bonded bridges, cantilever bridges don’t use metal clasps to connect the bridge to the teeth and are not recommended in the back of the mouth.

MARYLAND BRIDGES

A Maryland bridge is made of porcelain, metal, plastic, or some combination of materials.

A metal or porcelain wing is often placed on the back side of the bridge and are cemented to your existing teeth.

Your doctor will most likely install a Maryland bridge on your front teeth as the resin that holds the wing in place may not be strong enough to withstand the biting force of the molars.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR GETTING A DENTAL BRIDGE?

The first appointment in your dental bridge procedure will consist of preparing the teeth for the crown.

Preparation consists of reshaping these teeth by removing a small section of enamel to allow room for a crown to cover them.

Next, molds of your teeth will be made to act as a model from which the bridge and crowns (tooth shaped caps) will be created.

Your dentist may construct a temporary bridge to protect the exposed teeth and gums while your bridge is being made.

During your second appointment, the temporary bridge will be taken out and replaced with a custom-made bridge from the lab. Adjustments will be made as necessary to achieve a perfect fit.

Multiple visits may be necessary to check the fitting of the bridge. If the dental bridge is a permanent bridge, the dentist may temporarily cement it in place for a couple of weeks to make sure it is fitting properly.

After a couple weeks, the bridge is permanently cemented into place.

Certain steps involved in placing a dental bridge may cause some amount of pain and discomfort. However, these feelings are often minimized with the use of anesthesia. If you should feel any pain or discomfort throughout the procedure, notify your dentist immediately.

As for the average lifetime of a dental bridge, as long as you practice good oral hygiene and attend regular exams with the dentist it’s not uncommon for a bridge to last 10 years or more.

There are multiple factors that go into the pricing of a dental bridge. One of these factors is the number of false teeth in between the two end crowns. Also the material used to make the bridge can affect the final price. An initial 3 unit dental bridge can cost $1,100 to $2,300 if they are resin bonded, or Maryland bridge. However if the bridge is traditional the cost can be anywhere from $2,100 to $4,500.
